FAQs

Outdoor Suitability

Can your sculpture go outside?

Yes, all sculptures created by Jack Eagan Sculpture are carefully designed and crafted to withstand a variety of outdoor conditions. Bronze, being an exceptionally durable and weather-resistant material, ensures the longevity and preservation of each piece for many years, even when exposed to extreme external environments such as heavy rain, strong winds and varying temperatures.

Will my sculpture change if it is outside?

There are a wide range of patinas suitable for outdoor sculptures, each offering its own unique and distinct aesthetic qualities. Different patinas exhibit varying levels of durability and will naturally change or weather gradually over time when exposed to the outdoor elements. Each work naturalises to its specific environment, responding to factors such as sunlight, moisture and temperature fluctuations. With regular maintenance and proper care, the patina’s appearance can be effectively preserved, helping to significantly extend its overall longevity and beauty.

Do you ship sculptures in multiple parts?

The construction of some of the larger sculptures may need to be carefully shipped in multiple sections and then meticulously assembled on site. This approach helps to ensure safe transport and also facilitates ease of installation, minimizing the risk of damage during handling and allowing for a more efficient setup process.

Customisation and Sizes

How big are your sculptures?

All sculptures can be produced at a variety of scales, ranging from finely crafted wearable jewellery and elegant table top versions, all the way through to garden scale and monumental works.

How many sculptures do you make in an edition run?

All works remain unique, so no edition numbers are engraved or stamped into the works, only a unique reference number that correlates to our catalogue raisonne. Jack never makes the exact same piece twice, each sculpture is developed as a evolution of a concept or an existing piece. Similar works will be made, however they will display very obvious differences in scale, form and finish, which will distinguish and define each work as an individual creation.

Production Process

Where is the work made?

All sculptures are meticulously handmade by Jack in his dedicated UK studio. However, it is also possible to purchase a license along with the supporting process that allows for the manufacture of the sculpture based on a specific design.

What are the sculptures made from?

The sculptures are cast from high-quality silicon bronze alloy, with a guaranteed silicon content exceeding 4 percent. Fabricated components are crafted using either silicon bronze or phosphor bronze sheets, ensuring durability and aesthetic consistency. The bases are typically constructed from phosphor bronze and reinforced with a stainless steel internal framework for added strength. All fittings and connectors are made from the appropriate grade of stainless steel to ensure longevity and resistance to corrosion. Additionally, other materials such as stainless steel and Corten steel are occasionally incorporated into some sculptures to achieve specific design effects or structural requirements.

How long does it take to make a sculpture?

Manufacturing time generally ranges from three to six months, depending largely on the size and complexity of the sculpture or artwork being created.

Ordering and Commissioning

Can I commission a custom sculpture?

Yes, all sculptures are carefully made to order and can be fully customised to perfectly suit your individual requirements. Jack works closely and collaboratively with clients to develop bespoke designs that accurately match their unique vision and preferences.

Do you require a deposit for commissions?

Yes, a deposit of an agreed percentage of the entire project, the amount generally reflects the complexity of the sculpture. The deposit is required to secure the order, book the studio and enable us to begin work, the balance is payable upon completion, prior to delivery.

Materials and Finishes

What finishes are available for bronze sculptures?

Bronze sculptures can be finished with a very wide variety of patinas, colours and textures, offering numerous options that enable you to customise the appearance in detail. This flexibility allows you to perfectly suit your individual preferences, style and the specific environment or setting where the piece will ultimately be displayed or installed.

What is the difference between silicon bronze and phosphor bronze?

Silicon bronze is known for its smooth casting properties, excellent corrosion resistance and suitability for fine details, making it ideal for sculptures. Phosphor bronze, on the other hand, is often used in structural marine applications or fabricated pieces requiring additional strength and durability. Silicon bronze is golden in colour whereas phosphor bronze is "coppery" in colour.

Installation and Display

Can sculptures be installed indoors as well as outdoors?

Yes, sculptures are designed for both indoor and outdoor settings. Indoor pieces can be mounted on plinths, while outdoor sculptures are secured using custom bases or foundation systems.

Do you offer installation services?

We provide a comprehensive installation service for some of our works. In addition, we offer detailed installation guidance or can recommend trusted and experienced professional installers if needed. Larger pieces often require specialist equipment and careful handling to ensure safe delivery and precise, secure placement.

Maintenance and Care

How do I clean and maintain my sculpture?

Bronze sculptures require relatively minimal maintenance to preserve their beauty and integrity. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth is recommended for internal sculptures to remove dust and prevent buildup. For outdoor sculptures, applying a protective wax coating once a year helps safeguard the patina from environmental elements such as moisture and pollution. Additionally, a comprehensive maintenance programme will be provided along with the sculpture to guide proper care and ensure its longevity.

Will the patina fade or change over time?

The one thing you can always guarantee is that a patina on bronze placed outdoors will naturally change and develop over time because of various environmental factors such as moisture levels, sunlight exposure and temperature fluctuations, all of which contribute to giving each sculpture a unique and evolving character. To protect the artwork, the sculptures are carefully sealed with multiple layers of wax and with regular maintenance, it is possible to preserve the original appearance for as long as possible. Despite the changes to the surface patina, the bronze alloy beneath remains incredibly durable and resilient, ensuring the sculpture’s longevity for many years to come.
