Collaboration with Garden Designer Arit Anderson and Parkinson’s UK

Retrospective: The Making of UNITY

The Vision: Framing an Unfolding Journey

The collaboration began with a deliberate departure from the notion of sculpture as a passive monument anchored to a plinth. In conversations leading up to Chelsea, Arit Anderson set an exacting creative brief, design a presence that acts as a permanent, grounded frame for an ever shifting journey, one that breathes with the planting, responds to natural light and offers an anchor within an unpredictable world.

For Parkinson’s UK, the garden was conceived as an immersive sanctuary of resilience, rhythm and quiet reflection. The sculpture needed to embody that ethos not through rigid mass, but through continuous, dynamic balance.

“Arit invited me to design something that explores the concept of a permanent frame for an ever shifting journey. The goal was to ensure the artwork acts as a living part of the landscape, a point of reference that shifts alongside the planting and the light.”

Studio Furnace to Main Avenue

The evolution of the sculpture spanned months of design and direct studio work, moving from exploratory sketches, visualisations and then into direct investment casting and multi stage metal fabrication and finishing.

The form is defined by an uninterrupted, sweeping arch. This single ribbon of bronze serves as an emblem of enduring strength, balancing physical weight with visual lightness. Negative space was treated with equal priority to solid metal.

The apertures through the bronze actively frame sightlines across Arit’s planting palette, turning the surrounding botanical architecture into an essential component of the artwork itself. Cast in bronze and refined through meticulous chasing, the surface was developed to interact with natural sunlight, softening in low morning light and casting long, structural shadows as the sun traversed Main Avenue.

In the Garden: Sanctuary & Connection

When installed on Main Avenue, the bronze found its true context. Positioned among lush, tactile perennials and architectural planting, the piece served as both a focal anchor and an opening through which visitors experienced the garden.

For the community represented by Parkinson’s UK, the sculpture offered a steady, tactile presence, a quiet touchstone amid the sensory energy of the show, proving that raw metal and delicate nature can coexist to create genuine sanctuary.
