Patination: The Intersection of Art and Alchemy
In our studio, patination is never applied like wallpaper over metal. It is treated as an inseparable continuation of the form. Every curve, plane, fracture and cast texture dictates how heat moves through the bronze and where chemical reactions pool and oxidise. We don’t pick colours from a chart, we formulate bespoke chemical processes specifically tailored to the geometry and emotional weight of each sculpture.
One Form, Infinite Natures
The colour and texture of a patina can transform the nature of any given form, from classical deep, rich iron browns, faux stone finishes, and rich graphite blacks to lush verdigris, through to deep reflective polishes, directional brushed finishes, and surfaces gilded with precious metals like gold and silver, onto contemporary transitional colours, striking contrasting patinas, and solid, glowing synthetic coatings. They all hold their place in the rich world of sculpture and span many thousands of years of industry and invention.
Nature or Nurture: The Evolution of a Finish
Once the chemical reaction is complete, every bronze reaches a crossroads: to be preserved in a specific moment of time, or released to evolve alongside its environment. Neither approach is superior; the choice depends entirely on the setting, the intent of the commission, and how you wish the work to age.
Nurture (Sealed & Preserved)
By sealing the heated bronze with microcrystalline waxes, specialist lacquers, or architectural-grade matte polyurethanes, we arrest the chemical process. This locks in delicate translucent depths, high-contrast polished edges, and subtle studio nuances—protecting the surface from UV light, moisture, and atmospheric pollutants. With periodic waxing and care, the patina remains stable and faithful to the day it left the foundry.
Nature (Unsealed & Living)
Left to the elements, an unsealed patina becomes a living skin shaped by rain, sun, and coastal air. As the initial studio finish recedes into the hands of nature, it can enter a quiet, scruffy transitional phase before settling into its permanent character. What this alignment with nature offers in return is true seasonal change. Much like a monumental bronze on a windswept moor or an iron groyne on the shoreline, the sculpture shifts with the seasons—darkening to a rich, slate grey through the winter cold, then blooming under the summer sun as rust tones glow warm orange and verdigris flushes like coastal lichen.
Drawing on decades of studio research, custom chemical recipes and real world foundry experience, we have developed a catalogue of rare, layered finishes. The results span from deep, light-refracting translucent depths that mimic polished stone, through to heavily eroded, weathered surfaces cut back to reveal the chased metal beneath. The metal itself becomes an active element of the final finish; like raw linen exposed through paint, the bronze substrate provides the baseline of warmth, grain and structure that every chemical layer responds to.
The works below demonstrate a selection of proven studio formulations and surface treatments. Each serves as a starting point for dialogue, whether engineering a resilient, living finish for an exposed landscape commission or developing a bespoke, multi-layered decorative skin for an interior form.
