What is Patination?

At its core, patination is the process of applying layers of chemical solutions to a bronze surface, creating colours, textures and patterns that becomes the a skin over the sculpture. These layers are often complex compositions of metal oxides formed through a reaction between the bronze alloy and the carefully chosen patina recipe. Each patina is a delicate balance of science and artistry, crafted by hand to ensure that every finish is unique.

The Process : Science Meets Art

Creating a patina begins with heating the bronze surface to the ideal temperature for the desired reaction of the water molecules evaporating to steam and the injection of oxygen to form a metal oxide deposit on the surface of the bronze. Multiple thin layers of chemical solutions - crafted from oxides, metal salts and pigments - are then applied by hand. The interaction between the bronze and these solutions produces colours that range from subtle earth tones to vibrant primary hues. The patterns that emerge are shaped not only by the chemical reactions but also by the application techniques including bespoke brushes, spraying, and sponging.

Each patina is carefully documented, with recipes and methods recorded to capture the process and results. However, because of the many variables involved, no two patinas are ever identical. This inherent unpredictability imbues each sculpture with a sense of individuality and handmade authenticity.

Environmental factors such as sunlight, moisture and temperature subtly influence the surface over time, allowing the patina to naturalise to it’s setting. To preserve the finish while allowing for natural evolution, each piece is sealed with a high quality UV protective sealant. This ensures durability without compromising the organic, ever changing nature of the patina.
